Annually, two of my college buddies meet at my house in late June for some serious ocean salmon fishing.
The morning was cool, but the weather and ocean was calm, accented with a light fog. We journeyed due west from Ft. Bragg harbor for approximately 4 miles until we found an area called a "slick." We were not alone however. There was a single grey whale working the area. The only sound was the whale occasionally spouting water as he broke the surface. At times he was within 75 yards of our 19 ft. boat. It was obvious that he was feeding. Hopefully some salmon were also there feeding.
Not long after we set our lines out, we had a strike, and after an exciting battle, we landed a nice fresh king salmon. It wasn't long before we had our limits (2 each) of king salmon. The largest weighed 23 lbs. and the smallest was 10 lbs. We were in the harbor by 9:30 AM with grins of satisfaction all around. What better way to celebrate than break out the 'ol Moose Drool. Any beer would taste good during a time like that but the Moose Drool made the event even more wonderful.
Later, during the evening we again celebrated over Moose Drools, fresh barbequed salmon and fresh corn on the cob.
People can rave about their favorite 4-star restauraunt and $100.00 wine, but I'd match this dinner with the best.
